Questions and Mellow in Bahrain
Had really mellow weekend in Bahrain and jsut got back this evenining. If ever there, try to stay at hte diplomat and make sure Raja hails your cabs. Taxis there are into quite a racket, as everything is negotiable and they start there fares at 5 or 7 BD (18-24 USD) for a 1-3km trip. Ridiculous. if they give you too much trouble ask to see their watch or cuff links and use that as a bargaining matter, cause they are more than willing to bring up that fact that you are US citizen and assume your rich. Funny thing is they have meters, but won't use them.
All in all a very mellow weekend. Got some sun and some good meals, smoked some sheesha. had a chance to see Bill W in Bahrain too.
My questions are this:
Where to stay in Paris for three days? I was able to get a travel book for London, but do not have any lit or advice on Paris. So, If you have been there, I am open to suggestions. I am trying to stay in a Holiday Inn, but if you know a good area to base out of or a hotel that is a must stay at, let me know.
Also any suggestions from folk on must do's in either of these cities, is greatly appreciated. I have 2 days in London and 3 in Paris.
Thanks everyone for your comments, they really keep me going. I have gotten a little bored with the mundane routine over here and have been missing home a bit. Less than 2 weeks left in Saudi though, then a little adventure before getting back stateside, so I am sure this last couple of days here will fly by.
Ciao!

Told you I check your site continuously. You must have just posted this one.
Let me know if you need help with hotels. I will ask around here and e-mail an update.
Thanks for calling Robert on his birthday. We had a very nice time and cupcakes/ice cream for 70 residents. They all seemed to enjoy it and Robert looked really good and seemed to have a good time.
Love, Mom
Hi Joe - Hang in there and you'll be roaming around Paris and London in no time. As it turns out, I'm sending my parents to Paris this fall as a surprise, so the past week I've been looking at the areas. I know there is a Holiday Inn Paris Opera which is very near their hotel, so the location should be great.
As for London, I'm going to get in touch with a couple of my dearest friends there and I'll give you their numbers. Even if you don't use them, it's nice to have a friendly contact in your pocket while you're traveling. There are so many great places in London, but I'd say the must sees are Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, St. Pauls Cathedral, St. James Park and Buckingham Palace, Covent Garden, St. Pauls Church, Harrods to shop for your mom (preferably at night- very cool lights), and Kensington Palace and Gardens. Really though, just wandering around London and seeing where your feet take you has always been my favorite. My friends also know about some great street markets depending on when you'll be there.
Take care and enjoy the nice cool temps ;)
Merril,
Thanks for the list, that's awesome. I will be staying in Oxford Circus so all that should be relatively accesible. As for Heathrow to hotel, that should be interesting.
And for Paris, I'll be in St. Germain near St. Placide and Montparnasse train stations. Again central with tons accesible via the trains.
The great thing about London is the ease of using the tubes and trains to get around. Just jump on from Heathrow and you'll be in town in no time flat (ok, maybe an hour or so). Getting out of Heathrow on the otherhand....
It sounds like you'll be in great places for both cities so no doubt you'll have a blast. Hope you're studying up on those key french phrases.
Anywhere on the west side of London is cool, lots of Theatre and such in SOHO. Try staying in Covent Garden. Lot's to do & plenty of night life, not to mention you are 2 minutes from several Tube Stations.
Thanks Lazlo; did Webber find your true identity. He kept asking me, who the hell is Lazlo? and I though he was kidding, thought he knew. I guess I need to brush up on my CasaBlanca ehhh, cause I am still clueless on the Lazlo reference.
Lazlo is the/was the giant Samoan Attorney for Dr. Gonzo (Hunter S. Thompson). He has gone missing for quite some time. Yes, Webber figured out who I am & I had no clue about Casa Blanca, so I guess we both need to brush up.
